Amazon is expanding its sustainable packaging initiatives across Europe, deploying over 70 automated packaging machines in fulfillment centers in the UK, Germany, France, Italy, and Spain by 2025, with global expansion planned by 2027. These machines utilize sensors and machine learning to create right-sized packaging, such as recyclable paper bags (up to 90% lighter than cardboard) and custom-fit cardboard boxes, eliminating excess materials like plastic padding. The eco-friendly logistics strategy aims to reduce packaging waste by an average of 26 grams per shipment and optimize delivery vehicle space, lowering carbon emissions.
Key innovations include the Universal Robotic Labeller, which applies smaller labels directly to items or packaging, and collaborations with Mondi to develop paper-padded envelopes (awarded a Sustainability Award in 2023). Amazon has also redesigned packaging for Echo, Kindle, and Fire TV products, using 30% more recycled fiber and 60% less ink, while integrating QR codes for accessibility. Partnerships with Sparck Technologies, Ferag, and Ranpak further automate packaging processes with recyclable paper solutions, reducing labor and waste.
Amazon claims a 43% reduction in average packaging weight since 2015, saving over 3 million metric tons of materials. Half of European shipments now avoid boxes, relying on paper bags or Ships in Product Packaging (items shipped in original containers). These efforts align with Amazon’s goal to minimize packaging waste and advance the circular economy through automation and lightweight materials.
